John McLaren was born December 20, 1846, in Scotland, and studied at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. He was recruited by George Howard to create a garden for his estate "El Cerrito" in San Mateo, California. McLaren came to San Francisco and began work for Howard in February 1873.
